About This Song~ Lead Me Ever On

The prayer song in my book Paths of Peace and featured in my music video  “Lead Me Ever On,” was inspired by a character in one of contemporary author Lana Lynne Higginbotham’s historical novels, “Trails of Change.”

When I read this book, I was praying for wisdom and guidance from God just like the fictional character Boyd Richards when he asked the “Maker of his trails” to guide him down the right path.

Boyd’s name for God struck a fire of inspiration in my imagination.
Could the Lord be the Maker of my trails too?
My favorite part of the book, the last line, “…the maker of the trails had led Boyd home…” was the very spark that gave birth to my prayer song.

The Power of Language

Such is the amazing power of a beautiful story with real characters that are built on a foundation of truth.

Not only did gifted writer Lana Lynne create a historical masterpiece of fiction in Trails of Change, but she forever honored  her own Maker, the Lord Almighty with an exquisitely timeless name, “The Maker of My Trails.”

A Precious Gift

I am truly inspired by this precious gift the author has given not only to me through this book, and to the world, but also to the Lord in gracing Him with a new and wondrous name.

Boyd’s character inspired me to write my prayer song and also to create a little sketch as well!
Such is the power of excellent literature and language to fuel the creative impulses in others in myriad ways.
I wonder how many other readers were as powerfully affected by this book as I was and how many other wonderful creative seeds it has given birth to from its artful imagery, timeless wisdom, and the grace she weaves into the theme of each character’s personal stories throughout the novel.

Reflecting on the birth of this prayer song makes me realize more than ever the great importance of sharing our gifts and talents, for we will never know how far reaching the seeds of creativity we sow in this life may be planted in the hearts and minds of souls both now and in the future.

Inspire Others

I once read that children’s book writer and Illustrator Beatrix Potter influenced many filmmakers, among them Walt Disney.
Could she ever have imagined the many thousands of gifted writers, illustrators, filmmakers, artists, and musicians she would inspire through generations just from her amazing creativity, her brilliant little paintings, and imaginative stories?
All of those brilliant souls she influenced were once children in whose hearts her little books first planted their seeds of extraordinary wonder.

Can we ever know who we might inspire if we are obedient to the dream the Lord sows within our hearts?

Jesus said “... let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16 ESV

Faithfulness

Lana Lynne Higginbotham wrote a story that gave birth to a character that stirred my imagination so much it inspired a prayer song and a little sketch in my own heart!
That is powerful!

I pray and sing “Lead Me Ever On” now for comfort and encouragement.
Boyd’s name for God pointed to the One who guides us, just as the starry constellations are a sky map directing travelers on the course they need to follow to reach their destination.
The imagery of “The Maker of my Trails” echoes the words of the Psalmist:
“Show me Thy way, oh Lord, teach me Thy paths,
Lead me in Thy truth and teach me, for Thou art the God of my salvation
And on Thee do I wait all the day.” Psalm 25:4-5

Most of my prayer songs are inspired by the Bible, usually by the Psalms.
Yet “Lead Me Ever On” would not exist but for Lana Lynn’s faithfulness to share her great gifts with the world, and I am forever grateful to the Lord for her faithfulness to honor God.
Her life is a beautiful blessing on this earth.

“Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.” Proverbs 31:31 ESV

Oh Maker of my trails
May You lead me, Lord,
Lead me day by day
Oh lead me ever on.

Lead me to Your heart,
And let it be my home,
Oh lead me precious Jesus,
Oh lead me ever on.

Oh let me be Your own,
Oh make Your home in me
Oh Maker of my trails
My way I pray You’ll lead.

Oh Maker of my trails,
I love You, precious Lord,
Lead me Shepherd Jesus,
Oh lead me ever on.

*The scripture verse that also inspired this song is featured in the book Paths of Peace Illustrated Prayer Song Book where "Lead Me Ever On" is published along with all of the other prayer song lyrics that I sing on the Album Paths of Peace Prayer Songs of Love and Peace. Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him,
and He shall direct thy paths.
